Preparing Your Garden for Autumn: Hedge Trimming and Leaf Clearing Tips
Autumn Garden Preparation Guide
As temperatures begin to cool and leaves start to fall, autumn is a good time to tidy your garden and prepare it for the months ahead.
From giving hedges some attention to keeping lawns and pathways clear of fallen leaves, a few seasonal tasks can help keep your outdoor spaces tidy and easier to manage through autumn and winter.
Give your hedges some attention
After the main growing season, your hedges may need some maintenance before winter.
Start by checking for dead, damaged or broken growth and assess whether your hedges need trimming. The right timing and amount of pruning will depend on the hedge species, so avoid heavy cutting without first considering the needs of the plant.
When trimming, work carefully to maintain an even shape and use sharp, well-maintained hedge trimmer blades for clean, efficient cutting.
For larger or taller hedges, choose a hedge trimmer that gives you the appropriate reach and control. A pole hedge trimmer can be particularly useful when additional reach is needed from ground level.
Before starting, also check hedges for nesting birds or other wildlife and follow any applicable local regulations.
Keep fallen leaves under control
Fallen leaves can quickly build up across lawns, paths, patios and driveways. Clearing them regularly helps keep frequently used areas tidy and prevents large amounts of wet leaves from becoming difficult to manage.
A leaf blower can make clearing larger areas quicker and easier. Where conditions allow, work with the wind and move leaves progressively into manageable piles rather than trying to clear the entire area at once.
The right blower depends largely on the size of the property and the amount of material you regularly need to move.
A handheld blower offers manoeuvrability for gardens, patios, pathways and quick clearing jobs. For larger properties, heavy seasonal leaf fall or extended work, a backpack blower can provide the performance and carrying comfort needed for longer clearing sessions.
Not every fallen leaf needs to become waste. Depending on your garden, collected leaves can also be composted or used appropriately elsewhere in the garden.
Finish the season with equipment care
Autumn is also a good opportunity to give your equipment some attention, particularly if it will be used less frequently during winter.
After use, remove accumulated leaves, dirt and plant material from your hedge trimmer and blower. Inspect blades and other relevant components and check the fuel or battery condition according to your model.
For petrol and battery machines, storage and maintenance requirements can differ, so always follow the recommendations provided in your operator's manual.
And don't forget the working conditions. Wet leaves and damp ground can make surfaces slippery, so wear appropriate footwear, maintain stable footing and use the recommended personal protective equipment for the machine.
A little autumn maintenance can go a long way. By taking care of your hedges, managing fallen leaves and keeping your equipment in good condition, you'll leave your garden cleaner, tidier and better prepared for the colder months.
